Southern Hampshire CAMRA and Campaigning

Local Pubs Week The Southern Hampshire branch has over 1250 members, of which a proportion are active in the branch's campaigning activities. The branch's main campaigning events each year is Southampton Beer Festival - see our beer festivals page for more information. In addition to this, we write a Hop Press twice a year and hold many social and campaigning events including pub crawls, brewery trips, outings and seasonal parties. Details of these activities can be found on the Diary page. We run the LocAle campaign in Southern Hampshire, where we promote pubs that always sell beer sourced from local breweries (within 25 miles).

During our campaigning activities, we are able to present pubs and breweries with awards. Our awards page lists the achievements which have caused us to present awards.

Many branch members are also actively involved in CAMRA's National Campaigning activities, including:

  • The Great British Beer Festival
  • Local Pubs Week
  • National Cask Ale Week
  • Save Our Pubs
  • Full pints
  • Sustainable Communities Act

For more details on CAMRA's campaigning activities, please refer to the CAMRA National Campaigns Website.

CampaignDetails
Gales Brewery We supported Portsmouth & South East Hampshire CAMRA in it campaign to ensure that Fuller's acted fairly to the Gales' pub estate and brands.
Save The Bugle Campaign We fully supported the local residents of Twyford, Hampshire (Nr. Winchester) in their campaign to save their local pub. This was another example of the greed of property developers at the expense of our local communities and community facilities. We are delighted to report that The Bugle is once again a thriving village pub.
Jolly Sailor Preservation Campaign In November 2002 we discovered that the Jolly Sailor, Old Bursledon, (a Grade II listed building) had been given planning consent to completely re-arrange the interior of the pub, rip out the existing bars. In conjunction with local residents, we started a campaign, which was highly successful. In the end, the plans were approved - but not until a number of major improvements to the plans had been made.
